Cochineal colours

A couple of days ago I had some sunshine and some time off do felt like having another experimentation with cochineal.

Cochineal is a dye which needs a mordant to make it permanent on cloth and fibres. For this dye vat I used alum as a mordant wool fibres.

Alongside the undyed wool I used some wool which had previously been used in an exhausted woad vat.

The results are below, what I have found enjoyable about this  is the complete unpredictability and gentle tones achieved on the yarns.

  1. Yuou have achieved a lovely seies of tones – from apricot to bright pink – beautiful. The wool looks so gentle that one wants to touch it via the screen!
